Le Musée de l’érotisme de Paris
Founded in 1997, the museum is comprised of 5 impressive floors, and includes a basement exhibition. The collection ranges from the ancient religious art of India, Japan and Africa right up to contemporary art of the day, with emphasis on the overt in erotica. One floor is devoted to maisons closes, the legal brothels of the 19th and early 20th century. The film Polisson et galipettes is shown; it is a collection of pornographic shorts formerly exhibited in the maisons closes. The upper two floors have revolving exhibitions, ranging from first-century Peruvian phallic pottery through Etruscan fertility symbols to Yoni sculptures from Nepal; and the recently refurbished top floors host exhibitions of modern erotic art.
